Ukerewe Island Culture
Ukerewe Island the second largest fresh water lake in the world, Lake Victoria, lies the largest island within Tanzania with 530 km2. The coastal line of Ukerewe Island has numerous coves and is surrounded by a dozen smaller islands. The largest municipality is Nansio.
Ukerewe is known for a large population of Africans with albinism. Many of the first of them, who live there, were taken to the island by their families as children. Today they can live a safe life on the island, although they are still a suppressed minority in Tanzania.
